Did you know....

In 1493, Bellini painted a picture for Isabelle d'Este. Pleased, she asked him to paint a mythological piece for the Private Studio that she was decorating. Bellini didn't like being told what to paint so he made up excuses until d'Etse allowed him to paint a religious painting of his choice. For about two years though, Bellini did not do the painting. When he finally did, he proceeded at his own leisurely pace. Thinking he did not keep his word, Isabelle took him to court demanding him to deliver the work. The painting was delivered and Isabelle allowed him to paint another one, this time of his choice.

Giovanni Bellini's Methods of Painting

- His methods in painting were all crisp and linear.
- He wants the paintings to look fresh and new, not with old paint and on hard
paper
- He liked to mix morning, and earthly colors on his pallet
- He believed painting on wood panels were more effective
- He preferred oil paints
- Most of his paintings were done on wood

Giovanni Bellini

Portrait of Bellini
Giovanni Bellini was born in Venice in 1430 and died in 1516. Bellini was an Italian Renaissance painter, best known from the Bellini family of venetian painters. He began his career in his father's studio. His paintings from the early period are all executed in the old tempera method (permanent fast drying painting medium consisting of colored pigment mixed with a water-soluble binder). Bellini painted alot of religious scenes and he was talented when it came to landscapes. A while after his death, most of his greatest works were destroyed in a church fire in the year of 1577. Bellini was the most important painter active in Venice during the 15th century.
